Abstract:

Mentor text can be utilized in all academic areas to support students. While many educators often associate mentor texts with reading and writing, quality mentor texts can go beyond those two academic areas, such as math, science, social studies, and physical education/health. While selecting mentor texts, educators need to look for texts with engaging characters, rich language, intriguing illustrations, and memorable themes. Quality mentor texts can support student vocabulary development and provide platforms for student discussions. Gil (2017) reminds educators when working with mentor texts to "keep in mind that this is likely a new experience for struggling learners. This kind of higher-level thinking doesn’t come easily to many, so be patient and keep trying" (para. 11). Attendees will learn about the value of using mentor texts in the classroom. Sample mentor texts to utilize in the literacy, math, and physical education/health classroom will be shared. In addition to sample mentor texts, several activities will be provided for educators to apply into their classroom. The presentation would also be beneficial for educators in higher education as they support pre-service teachers.
