Abstract:
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has only added to the trauma experienced by our youth by increasing their feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. The authors will share recommendations from their recent published article that provides practitioners in schools clear connections between which evidence-based interventions can be used to foster which protective factors and positive childhood experiences. Counselors can use resources identified from this work in collaboration with school staff and with families to enhance Positive Childhood Experiences and Protective Factors to buffer the impact of the pandemic and other childhood adversity. Attendees will discuss current research illustrating the impact of the pandemic on the mental health and learning of our students in schools. The presenters will share resources from the grant-funded Ohio statewide family engagement center in the United States that practitioners can apply to bolster family engagement in schools to enhance protective factors of students. Attendees will also practice applying simple strategies for collaborating with staff and families to foster protective factors that can buffer the potentially traumatic impacts of the pandemic. In addition, evidence-based interventions that can be delivered in the school setting at the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support through Tiers 1, 2, and 3 to increase Positive Childhood Experiences and Protective Factors to support the success of all students will be provided.
