Abstract:

In the UK, a doctoral candidate registers to study on a piece of original research under the supervision and guidance of one or two experienced academic researchers. The supervisors meet them regularly to advise them on conducting their research and writing a doctoral dissertation. The PhD supervision plays a vital role to assist PhD students in completing their research within the available time frame and transforming into independent academic researchers. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic literature review to understand the recognized challenges and best practices available to provide high-quality support to doctoral students in Higher Education programmes in the UK. This study investigates existing research in the past two decades focusing on both supervisors' and students' perceptions. The identified best practices are further discussed for the application for emerging requirements, such as blended and online doctoral supervision.
