Abstract:

This research aims at investigating lecturers’ use of videos in teaching and learning of different disciplines at The Maldives National University (MNU). The research focuses on developing appropriate practices of using video pedagogy in teaching and learning, and helping lecturers enhance their student learning through their use of videos in teaching. The research adopted a mixed method action research approach and used survey, conversational interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings revealed that the lecturers use videos to deliver course information in the class time. The findings also revealed that short videos with informal talking, and tablet drawings, like Khan-Academy are much more engaging. Allowing students to view content outside of class, providing students with additional resources to supplement core materials, and providing demonstration are the ways lecturers suggested to bring about active learning and flexibility using videos. Finally, the findings suggest that the lecturers concede video as a resource that helps learners to recall the lessons, engage in critical reflection, and map the progression. The only constraint reported was feeling nervous while creating videos. This research significantly contributes the lecturers’ positive attitudes and perception of creating engaging, purposeful, and interactive videos using simple tools. Additionally, the instructional designers and academics who became the ambassadors by completing training workshop find a range of new learning of interests for their roles in teaching and learning at MNU that could help for their professional growth.
