Abstract:

This presentation will report on the outcomes of the CLIL Open Online Learning (COOL) project which was funded by the EU Erasmus+ programme. Since 2019, the project partnership has been updating and expanding the functionality of Clilstore (clilstore.eu), an Open Educational Resource (OER) which serves as a repository of open access materials and an authoring tool that enables educators to create multimedia-rich learning units and integrate Web 3.0 applications. Clilstore is comprised of two integrated components: a) Multidict, which allows learners to look up the meaning of a word in a single interface and choose from selection of free online dictionaries in over eighty language pairs, and b) Wordlink, which enables learners to embed a web page into its interface, automatically allowing each word to be clicked thus calling up the Multidict dictionary interface. The system is built on scaffolding theories to aid learners improve their language knowledge in general but, more specifically, to help them expand their vocabulary and boost their reading skills. Clilstore also allows students to create presentation portfolios based on their learning activity within the OER. These portfolios promote learner autonomy and allow students to build a repository of their work and self-assess their learning progress. It also includes a vocabulary building and testing function based on the words that have been clicked on from within any Clilstore unit. The author will illustrate Clilstore and its uses and conclude by presenting data from a study conducted with a cross-section of CLIL practitioners.
