Abstract:

Experiential learning theory emphasizes on the importance of learning through experiences and reflection. Recently, the question of how to implement a teaching strategy has attracted great attention from educators. In this study, we designed a course on the theme of death. During this course, students were expected to learn reflectively and eventually create a video to interpret their conception of death for digital advocacy. To evaluate the course’s effectiveness, we used phenomenography as a tool for rolling action research for different course stages. The results of the content analysis suggest that experiential learning activities made the students’ interpretation of death more positive, while creative practices encouraged students to focus on presenting their understandings with a higher level of certainty. One of the implications for the design of experiential learning is that stage-specific learning objectives should be set in order to meet the overall teaching goals.
