Abstract:

Assuming it as a specialization within the theoretical framework of Cultural Journalism, Film Journalism constitutes itself as an object of study still to be explored by the social and communication sciences. With Cinema as one of the cultural and artistic manifestations with the greatest presence in the Portuguese media, it is important to develop research on the journalistic coverage of this cultural and artistic manifestation. The present study presents a new contribution that allows us to understand the expression, the practice and characterize the Film Journalism produced and practiced in 2019 in Portugal in a transversal way to the various media and to point out the trends of this journalistic specialization. This is an extensive investigation that analysed the main newspapers and radio and television news shows dedicated to cinema and their online pages throughout 2019. In this way, we seek to understand: what are the characteristics, in the year 2019, of the journalistic coverage of the Portuguese press, online, radio and television of cinema? To this end, it was applied an extensive content analysis of the main Portuguese newspapers Público, Correio da Manhã, Jornal de Notícias, Diário de Notícias, Expresso and Observador and the radio shows A Grande Ilusão and Cinemax and the television shows Cinebox, Janela Indiscreta and Cartaz Cinema. Being that academic research about this topic is practically non-existent, we conclude that Portuguese Film Journalism produced in 2019 is largely based on the dissemination and promotion of film premieres and festivals, approached according to a consumerist logic.
