Abstract:

In our globalised world, where interaction is fluid and greatly diversified, English language teachers should be aware of the complex processes that underlie the current use of English, especially in its Lingua Franca function, above all in terms of intercultural and multilingual realities as well as of effective and appropriate communicative practices. This involves adopting a broader framework in ELT: research into the pedagogical implications of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and Intercultural Communication have shown that Language Teacher Education (TEd) is one of the most relevant dimensions to promote such a shift in perspective in ELT, in order to embrace a more inclusive and critical approach to the teaching of language and culture ‘in communication’. An ELF-aware perspective (Sifakis 2019) can provide such a broader reference framework in Language TEd, too, including a focus on the relevance of Communication Strategies and Language Awareness in their multilingual and meaning negotiation characteristics. Such framework can contribute to create a close connection between the actual use of English in different communicative contexts and its pedagogical dimension in ELT. In light of these considerations and within an ELF-aware approach, in this presentation examples of activities to include awareness of, and reflection on, Communication Strategies and Language Awareness in Language TEd and ELT practices will also be explored.
