Abstract:

This study examines the potential impact of social media use on inter-family communication from the perspective of family communication patterns theory (FCPT).
Using the assumptions of the FCPT, The study attempts to investigate the impact of social media on two dimensions that determine family communication patterns, namely conversation orientation and conformity orientation, as well as the impact on the four types of family communication patterns proposed by the FCPT: consensual, pluralistic, protective, and laissez-faire. Methods and data collection The data will be collected using a questionnaire and focus group discussions applied to family members. While focus group discussions are used to gather qualitative data on the impact of social media on family communication, the quantitative data will be collected using a questionnaire that includes scales measuring social media use, dimensions assumed by the FCPT theory as well as some other variables related to family demographic characteristics. The questionnaire will be applied to a sample of adult family members in Egypt and the UAE. The sample will include fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters. The sons and daughters should be above 18 years old. It is expected that data will be collected from a sample size of approximately 400 respondents in the two countries. 3 families in each country will be used as focus groups.
