Abstract:

Over the recent years, the COVID-19 have been challenging academic institutions while making them reconsider their evaluation and examination methods (Cornock, 2020; Elman et al., 2020). Institutions were challenged by realities of social isolation imposed on their staff and students while making them shift their practices to distant modes. Here, we suggest an alternative approach we practiced in 2021 with 80 students attending a course on research methods as we aimed to alleviate some of the mentioned challenges. There, we started by asking students to suggest an academic paper that meets a topic of their interest. About two weeks before the formal course exam, the lecturer confirms to each of the students that the paper is adequate in terms of expected content and level. In the 2nd phase, students are requested to formulate questions addressing the selected papers in manners that require answering while exploiting terms taught during the course. They do so as they are aware that the exam may include a variation based on questions they suggested for their contributed paper. In the last phase, the lecturer conducts an exam addressing the paper contributed by the student. Preliminary results of our study indicate that students perceive the activity as meaningful, experiential, and increasing their engagement in their studying process. We aim to examine this approach in additional domains in our coming efforts. We propose this study as an approach suggested to alleviate educational challenges educational systems may encounter in the future beyond the days of pandemics.
