Abstract:

Background: Humanoid robot intervention programmes for children with ASD are developing rapidly. This study aimed to (1) identify the qualitative outcomes of the robot-mediated social skill training programme, (2) examine the impact of such programme on social participation, and (3) explore the implications of a best practice program design to enhance social development of children with ASD.

Methods: A qualitative approach with a multiple case study design was adopted. Twelve children with ASD, who aged 5 to 11, were included. Children enrolled in the intervention program had received 12 weekly sessions of robot-mediated social skill training programme. A humanoid robot was integrated into the training program to assist the instructor in conducting social skill training activities for children. Data was collected through interviews, observations, and assessments. Within-case analysis was done using pattern matching logic to identify the successful outcomes and impact of the program. Across-case analysis was used to compare, contrast and extract the essential elements in best program practice.

Results: A comprehensive profile of each case was formed to reveal the outcomes and impacts of the program. A best practice framework was collated to inform a best practice program design.

Conclusion: Successful outcomes of the robot-mediated social skill training program for children with ASD were identified. To ensure effectiveness of programme in enhancing the social development of children with ASD, It is essential to consider the program's specific objectives and include the necessary elements of programme design to ensure best practice.
