Abstract:

The aim of this research is to contribute to social transformation and citizen empowerment in the Nou Llevant-Soledat Sud neighbourhood of Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The starting hypothesis is based on the premise that any experience with art, as a creative process involving active participation, can definitely contribute to the construction-consolidation of the social framework of a neighbourhood, thus reinforcing the cultural and educational essence of the neighbourhood itself. It includes three objectives: to design a transdisciplinary artistic program of socio-educational intervention based on the interconnection of the university, school and society; to implement this program in a disadvantaged and marginal peripheral neighbourhood; and to evaluate the implementation of this program and its impact in the educational, artistic, social and cultural domains within the neighbourhood. Our work is based on research methodology grounded in the arts and in the frame of participatory action research and following a horizontal approach, the various stakeholders participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of each artistic-pedagogical action. The programme titled ‘My Neighbourhood, My School’ consists of 29 actions, in which situated learning was implemented, where the pedagogical material for each of the actions is provided by the neighbourhood itself from different approaches (music, technology, art-visual arts, ceramics, drama, sociology, architecture, etc.). The project intends to provide a solution to the specific needs of community associative life based on artistic practices, and in this sense, education in the arts is a powerful engine for educational, cultural and social transformation (http://re-habitarelbarrio.uib.eu/).
