Abstract:

Mass media, particularly the news and current affairs can be highly impactful towards the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The present study focusses on the potential of media within the socio-economic, cultural, and political ground of Bangladesh. Based on the empirical research findings and combining the qualitative and quantitative approach to data collection and analysis, it assesses the contemporary media performance with respect to achieving SDGs and proposes a set of pragmatic imperatives for the media stakeholders to function effectively in this regard. The conceptual framework of the present study helped inquiring why media and communication processes were not adopted adequately for achieving sustainable development? It also asks who are the key actors, how the actors comprehend their roles and reflect to their actions toward sustainable development. The primary domain of investigation in this study has been the interactive practices of media participants, stakeholders and policymakers. Therefore, we have conducted a baseline survey among the media participants, such as the media critics, communication scholars, news editors, journalists, media policy makers and government officials. In the ultimate analysis, the paper examines as to how the SDGs as concepts, practices and projects have been communicated to the stakeholders and public at large. It highlights the challenges of inadequate communication for the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. Finally, it indicates the effective media practices for promoting SDGs, the communication model for grassroots development and the need for participatory media culture in Bangladesh.
