Abstract:
This paper aims to explore cultural and historical variations in the concept of happiness among university students from two nations. In order to gain an in-depth understanding of the concept of happiness, a qualitative case study was conducted at Al-ain University, UAE, and Birzeit University, Palestine. Semi-structured group and individual interviews were used to collect data from participants belonging to different cultures, to explore cultural similarities and differences in concepts of happiness. Grounded theory, constant-comparative methods and discourse analysis procedures were used to interpret the data. Our findings show that the concept of happiness influences and is influenced by students' day-to-day experiences and by social and cultural aspects of their lives.
