Creating Liveable Public Spaces

The city and its Public spaces should provide the desired setting for everyday urban life. The development of the city should foster continuation of everyday life for all social classes of the society. Cities have gradually been losing its legacy represented through its architecture, urban space characteristics, and lifestyle. This is due to several reasons such as the lack of appreciation of the culture of the city, the lack of critical reading on the evolution of the city, and because of ignoring the social part of sustainability in design and decision making. This paper aims to overcome these challenges and to search and examine how we can create healthy, productive, and enjoyable public spaces, First, it defines the meaning of place-making and the logic of livable spaces, then it analyzes some case studies in the western and European countries, and finally it provides practical strategies that help in creating livable spaces. This paper confirms that creating livable public spaces that suit all users is a very important issue when shaping the future of the sustainable cities.
