Abstract:

This presentation focuses on the European Union data economy’s new business opportunities in the creative sector. While data economy infrastructures are composed of business and policy stakeholders and aim to support equal growth across sectors, the art sector still lacks a unified European data space. European Data Spaces offer an operational environment for data sharing as a business model. Since practical business cases in the art sector are still emerging, this presentation outlines three potential cases: 1. The sale or sharing of an art piece as data, transferring ownership between seller and buyer. 2. Sharing art for use in broader contexts, such as multidisciplinary performances or as training material for AI, where artists sell their work to developers. 3. Creating art using existing data, emphasizing joint development in value chains consisting of artists, art buyers and exhibitions. Even though the cases are conceptual, existing Data Spaces are producing use cases following similar structure in media and heritage sectors. The presentation provides creatives with insights into fair methods for sharing art. The presentation is based on systematic literature review in the business management sector. It consists of two clusters of search terms; business development and digital business environments. The analysis results are 1. status of current academic research, 2. research gaps and 3. research structure for the creative sector. Currently academic contributions to such topics are limited. This presentation is a significant contribution to business development in creative Data Spaces, and invites concrete action for data-based business.
