Abstract:
Preparing Students for Taking the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE): The Design of an Online Self-paced Courseware and Evaluation After years of education, graduates are naturally keen to give something back and contribute to society. One of the most efficient ways is to join the civil service and serve the public. The Civil Service Bureau of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) requires that anyone applying for civil service posts at a degree or professional level must first pass the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE). Since there is no formal training from faculties and departments in the University of Hong Kong (HKU), an online self-paced courseware for the CRE using the e-learning system ‘HKU Open EdX’ is piloted in 2016. It is then further developed and launched in 2020 to meet the students’ needs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the online courseware on how to help students for preparing the CRE. The analysis includes the beta testing of the online courseware and the evaluation of level of difficulty of the test questions by students through questionnaire and in-depth focus group interviews. After modification of testing questions according to students’ feedbacks, the online courseware is launched for all HKU students. Participants of the online courseware are invited to complete an online questionnaire to provide their feedback on the effectiveness of the courseware. The results are very positive and participants find the online courseware is convenient and useful for them to prepare the CRE.
