Abstract:

Empathy is the ability to share someone else feelings or experiences by imagining what it would be like to be in that person's situation. The three essential qualities of a creative leader are Empathy, Clarity and Creativity. Empathy helps students to gain first-hand insight into the experiences of a diverse population. As a teacher, I believe empathy is the key to forging creative leaders of tomorrow towards a more equal and diverse society. In this presentation, I will explain how I have been using empathy as a core teaching strategy to deliver theoretical content closer to people’s lives, for students to practice those theories, and for me to stand in students’ shoes and improve my teaching. Examples range from using persona profiles to put theory into context, creating do it yourself wearable simulators for students having first-hand experience of people lacking capabilities and co-creating a virtual reality assisted experiential learning to see, feel, and create an age-friendly society. The approach has rendered an average score of 4.4 on a scale of 5 in the student feedback questionnaire in the accumulated survey from the previous 3 years.
