Title: Ageism Unmasked: From Ageism to Elderhood
Stream: Public Policy
Presentation Type: Oral Presentation
Authors:
Tracey Gendron, Virginia Commonwealth University, United States
Abstract:
This session translates decades of research on age discrimination into actionable steps on how to overcome ageism and ableism both personally and professionally. The presentation takes a journey through time to reveal the forces that have shaped our understanding of aging and what it means to be old. Participants will learn to recognize and understand the forces that have created the present in order to craft a purposeful path to a better future. This historical account will help us understand the factors that have contributed to our beliefs and misconceptions about aging and explain the deficiency in our current understanding and acknowledgement of elderhood. By learning from the past, we will develop tools to empower ourselves and others to create an anti-ageist world built upon the foundation of elderhood. To be anti-ageist means that we develop the knowledge and skills to disrupt ageist and ableist thought and behavior within ourselves, communities, policy, and culture.
