Abstract:

Teacher shortage worldwide is on the rise. In Israel this shortage is strongly felt in all core subjects, specifically in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and Mathematics. Efforts to ensure that the majority of pre-service EFL teachers in teacher education programs choose to pursue a teaching career upon graduation need to be made. The study being presented set out to investigate whether Sense of Coherence in Teaching Situations (SOCITS) exists among pre-service EFL teachers and whether it can be a determinant and a predictor of pre-service EFL teachers’ intentions to pursue a teaching career upon graduating from their teacher education program. In this qualitative study, 24 pre-service EFL teachers in a teacher education college in Israel were interviewed in semi-structured interviews. The results yielded evidence for the existence of SOCITS among pre-service EFL teachers who wish to pursue a teaching career, as well as for the influence of SOCITS and its three components: comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness. Both these elements, the existence of SOCITS and its influence, affected the pre-service EFL teachers’ decisions to pursue a teaching career upon graduating from their teacher education program. Some important insights and implications were revealed from the findings and conclusions of this study and these may aid in the development of an innovative EFL teacher education program for pre-service EFL teachers in the third year of their studies.
