Abstract:

Reflecting on lived experiences as art learners in South Korea and the historical landscape of the field of Art Education in the United States, both of which subscribed to the Western cultures and ideology, we draw from Jacques Derrida’s (1994) notion of “hauntology,” the temporal, historical, and epistemological traces converge with the presence of being and argue that our colonized experiences as art learners in South Korea continue to conjure up and affect our current practices as art educators. Additionally, we draw from Transformative Learning Theory to argue that hauntology allows us to generate learning experiences that involve the process of using prior knowledge to understand and construe a new and revised interpretation of the meaning of one’s knowledge, as well as using the experience to move forward to future actions (Mezirow, 1991, p. 5). We use duo-autoethnography to show dialogically the interconnections between our lived experiences and professional practices as art education researchers and raise the question: how might the personal lived experiences of an educator foster one’s art pedagogy and research? In this time when xenophobia and hate crimes against Asian, particularly women, is prevalent in Western societies, we believe sharing our stories of art learning in South Korea and current teaching practice as art educators in higher education is highly important in diversifying perspectives in the field of art education. It’s critical to promote and sustain individuals’ cultural significance and research to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion – to ensure sustainability.
