Abstract:

The current capitalistic model of development and the commodification of commons across the world has proven to be unsustainable. The advancement of a sustainable future where humans flourish is dependant on the emergence of economical and cultural transitions towards a changed civilizational model. This research explores discourses around such different visions of alternatives to development in the Global South, namely Buen Vivir in Latin America, Ubuntu in South Africa and Gandhian Economy of Permanence in India. These systems are studied with respect to their context, features, limitations, and current examples of their execution. Salient features and common themes are identified as well to serve as the basis for further innovation.
