Abstract:

The inclusion of educational technology in teaching language is more palpable than ever, owing to the pandemic situation. In Kerala, a southern state in India, multiple lockdowns mandated its use to allow uninterrupted education. However, in teaching ESL (English as Second Language), the sudden shift from the traditional classroom to a technology-enabled classroom proved more challenging for the teachers and learners than showcasing flexibility. Since the utilization of technology in the realm of ESL teaching before pandemic was almost non-existent in Kerala, the unforeseen shift highlights the gaps inherent in its implementation and necessitates discussions on improvements. The difficulties that language teachers face in adapting to the use of technology are several, a major factor being the lack of awareness and training.
This paper is a result of classroom research conducted in the ESL context of Kerala. The challenges encountered by language teachers are analyzed to study the efficacy of educational technology in ESL. In addition, the paper discusses some of the educational technologies like blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English), word-processing and grammar tools, etc. that can be used to teach specific language skills at the tertiary level in Kerala. The paper is also set to make suggestions on how these applications and tools can assist teachers to improve teacher and learner performance in ESL classrooms.
