Abstract:

This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of interactive pedagogy on learner confidence in Life Skills within the domain of vocational education through the implementation of a new personal leadership subject at Temasek Polytechnic. Delivery of topics such as Personal Effectiveness, Personal Values and Ethics, and Self-Awareness have typically not been well received by youth when delivered via traditional ‘chalk and talk methods’ and theory. Incorporating group activities, class discussions, debates, and real-world case studies allows for students to learn from and with each other, and, sharpen their communication competencies and critical thinking skills. Quantitative and qualitative data were used in the course of the study to analyse learning outcomes and impact. Preliminary findings demonstrate how interactive pedagogy can enhance confidence when communicating, self-esteem, student learning, and foster a greater appreciation for Life Skills topics. The new subject, rolled out during the COVID-19 pandemic, also offered opportunities for facilitators to utilise interactive technology when lessons were conducted online to maintain interactivity in teaching and learning. Ultimately, research suggests that a shift to learner-centric and dialogic models in the classroom (virtual or otherwise) potentially leads to enhanced learning outcomes, even within the vocational education setting, where learners are often stereotyped to be “doers” instead of active “communicators”. This project seeks to fill a gap in existing research on Life Skills acquisition in vocational education and to provide practical examples for educators to utilise and promote interactive pedagogy.
