Abstract:

One of the most significant determinants of academic success is emotional intelligence (EI). Numerous studies examine this relationship and its application in education; however, there are relatively few studies on this topic in Vietnam, especially at the bachelor's level. This study thus investigates the relationship between EI, defined as a combination of four main capabilities: perception, assimilation, understanding, and regulation of emotions (Mayer and Salovey, 1997), and academic performance (AP), as proxied by the cumulative grade point average (Talib et al., 2012), among students reading Multimedia Communication (MC) at the FPT University HCMC Campus. Data was collected from 312 random samples using a questionnaire adopted from the Wong and Law EI scale (2002). This four-dimensional scale consists of Self-Emotion Appraisal (expression of emotion in the self), Other-Emotion appraisal (the recognition of emotion in others), Use of Emotion (the use of emotion to facilitate performance), and Regulation of Emotion (the ability to control emotions in the self). The Wong and Law EI scale is widely used to measure EI and to study many subjects in Vietnam, especially those related to university students. The collected data was analysed using SPSS through descriptive analysis and correlation analysis. The findings indicate that Use of Emotion is positively associated with the AP of respondents. With an appropriate focus on EI, MC students will quickly adapt to the new pace of post-COVID-19 society, improve their learning outcomes, and support their careers in the future. This study has the potential to contribute to the education of MC professionals at Vietnam’s bachelor level.
