Abstract:

Practical skills are emphasized in the nursing profession, and nursing schools provide various alternative education programs to develop students' competencies. In alternative education, nursing colleges provide extracurricular programs that are linked to the student’s major. Insufficient studies on indicators evaluating the effectiveness of such extracurricular programs are available. The purpose of this study is to develop an evaluation system and indicators for extracurricular programs in nursing schools. To achieve the research purpose, the learning outcome evaluation system was established according to the Kirkpatrick Model. Based on the system at each level, the learning strategy was organized by incorporating the Jeffries Simulation Theory. Based on the theoretical framework, a draft evaluation model and detailed indicators were developed and validated using a Delphi survey. According to the four-level learning stage (learning, experience, advance, perform), indicators divided into eight components (learning type, learning environment, faculty participation, student participation, faculty-student interaction, educational operation, educational outcome, result) was developed. By organizing educational outcome indicators at the individual and institutional level, which were insufficient in the Jeffries Simulation Theory, a reference for the outcome of competency education is presented. The indicators of educational effectiveness can be used as interventional factors for ensuring program quality as well as for program accreditation and outcome evaluation. The implications for educational programs and evaluation systems in developing student competency of the professional field were discussed.
